FAQs
Private blood test questions
Everything you need to know about having a private blood test at Lantern Clinic in Cowes, Isle of Wight.
Booking
Do I need a GP referral for a private blood test?
No. You can book any of our blood tests directly, without a referral from your NHS GP. Every test is still reviewed by a doctor, and your results are explained on a call with your doctor.
Where and when are your blood clinics?
Blood tests take place at Lantern Clinic in Cowes, on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The blood draw itself takes 10 to 20 minutes. You'll find our address, parking and directions on our contact page.
Can I come from Portsmouth or Southampton?
Yes. Many of our patients travel over from the mainland. Cowes is a short ferry crossing from Southampton, and you can book a morning slot that fits around your crossing.
Which blood test should I choose?
Pick the test that matches your symptoms or goals: thyroid, hormones, tiredness, or a full annual health check. If you're not sure, book a free discovery call and we'll help you choose the right one.
Can I order a single test, like vitamin D or ferritin?
Yes. Single tests, allergy testing and stool tests are available on request. Contact us and we'll let you know the price and arrange your appointment.
Preparing for your test
Do I need to fast before my blood test?
Ideally, have your last meal no later than 10pm the night before. On the morning of your test, drink plenty of water so you're well hydrated, which makes the blood draw easier.
Fasting means no solid food. Water and other plain fluids are fine. If your appointment is later in the morning, a very light breakfast is OK, but avoid a heavy meal.
When in my cycle should I have a hormone test?
If you have regular periods, we'll usually suggest timing your hormone test to a specific day of your cycle so the results are meaningful. We'll advise you on the best day when you book. If your cycles are irregular, or you're perimenopausal or postmenopausal, you can usually test on any day.
Results
How quickly will I get my results?
Most results are back within a few working days. Thyroid results are usually ready in 2 days, while some specialist tests take a little longer. Once your results are in, we'll book your results call with your doctor.
Who reviews and explains my results?
A GMC-registered doctor reviews every result and explains it on a call with you, including what's normal, what's borderline, and what to do next. You can meet our team here.
What happens if something abnormal shows up?
Your doctor will explain what it means and agree a plan with you. That might be a repeat test, further investigations, treatment with us, or a letter to your NHS GP if you'd like one.
Which laboratory analyses my blood?
Your sample is analysed by Nationwide Pathology, a UKAS-accredited laboratory, so your results meet the same quality standards used across UK healthcare.
How is a private GP blood test different from a home test kit?
With a home finger-prick kit, you usually get an automated report. At Lantern Clinic, a trained clinician takes a full blood sample, and a doctor reviews your results and talks them through with you. They can then act on them, whether that's treatment, further tests or a referral.
