What Happens During a Functional Medicine Consultation? A Step-by-Step Guide (UK)

A Different Approach to Healthcare

Functional medicine is built on a simple but powerful principle: Treat the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Rather than focusing on a single issue in isolation, it looks at how different systems in the body interact, including:

  • gut health

  • hormones

  • immune function

  • metabolism

  • lifestyle and environment

Because in reality, these systems are deeply connected. This means consultations are often more in-depth, more thoughtful, and far more personalised than traditional appointments.

Step 1: The Discovery Call

(A Gentle First Step)

For many clinics, including Lantern Clinic, the journey begins with a free discovery call.

This is a short, informal conversation designed to:

  • understand your main concerns

  • explore your goals

  • explain how the process works

  • help you decide if this approach is right for you

There is no obligation to proceed, and no pressure.

For many people, this step alone brings a sense of relief and clarity — finally being able to talk things through properly.

Step 2: Initial Comprehensive Assessment

The next step is your Initial Comprehensive Assessment.

Before your appointment, you’ll be asked to complete detailed health questionnaires with as much information as possible. These help us understand your symptoms, timeline, medical history, lifestyle, diet, stress, sleep, hormones, digestion, previous treatments, and what has changed over time.

Your functional medicine doctor then reviews this carefully in preparation for your initial consultation, which usually lasts 60–75 minutes.

The focus of this appointment is not to rush to a label, but to analyse the triggers, mediators, and contributing factors that may have led to your symptoms or chronic illness.

As the old medical teaching says:

“90% of the diagnosis is in a skilful history.”

Functional medicine views the body as a complex, interconnected system. Your gut, hormones, immune system, nervous system, metabolism, and environment are constantly influencing one another.

By taking this deeper, whole-person view, we can begin to understand the chain of events that brought you here —and identify where to start restoring balance.

Step 3: Advanced Testing

Functional medicine allows us to go beyond surface-level symptoms by using targeted, clinically appropriate investigations to better understand what may be driving your health concerns. This is not about doing more tests- it is about doing the right tests, at the right time. Depending on your history and presentation, this may include:

  • Stool microbiome analysis
Learn more about gut microbiome testing

  • Hormone testing
(such as DUTCH testing and adrenal cortisol patterns)

  • Nutritional and metabolic markers
(including Metabolomix and Organic Acid Testing)

  • Blood work
(ranging from routine NHS panels to more specialised functional markers)

  • Genetic testing
(such as Lifecode, helping us understand individual predispositions and personalised pathways)

  • Environmental toxin assessment
(including mycotoxins and heavy metals, when clinically indicated)

  • Infection screening
(including viral or “stealth” infections where appropriate)

In addition, as medically trained doctors, we can refer for conventional imaging and investigations, including:

  • MRI scans

  • CT scans

  • Ultrasound and

  • Other diagnostic imaging

This is an important part of our approach. We combine conventional medical diagnostics with advanced functional testing, ensuring that nothing important is missed and that your care remains both safe and comprehensive.

Step 4: Your Personalised Health Plan

Following your testing, you’ll receive a tailored, structured treatment plan.

Any test results are always interpreted in the context of your personal history, symptoms, and overall health picture, not in isolation.

We take time to explain your results in a clear, patient-friendly way, ensuring you fully understand what they mean and how they relate to how you feel.

At Lantern Clinic, this is a key part of our approach.

Our Lantern Method is designed not only to guide you towards healing but to empower you with knowledge and understanding.

We believe that true, lasting change happens when:

  • you understand your body

  • you feel confident in your plan

  • you are actively involved in decision-making

  • a lifestyle prescription: diet, stress, sleep, relationships

  • involves supplements, botanicals, and prescribed medication when indicated.

This is a shared, collaborative process, known as participatory care.

Rather than simply being told what to do, you are supported to understand, engage, and take ownership of your health.

Step 5: Ongoing Support and Follow-Up

Health transformation doesn’t happen overnight, and you’re not expected to do it alone.

Follow-up appointments allow you to:

  • track your progress

  • refine and adjust your plan

  • address new symptoms or challenges

  • stay supported and accountable

This is one of the most important differences in functional medicine:

“It is a process, not a one-off appointment.”

As your body changes, your plan evolves with you.

Understanding the Commitment: Time, Expectations & Investment

Functional medicine is a different way of approaching health, and it’s important to be clear about what that involves.

This is not a quick fix. Most patients work with us for a minimum of 4 months, and more realistically, around 6 months or longer, depending on how complex their condition is. This allows time to properly understand what is driving symptoms, implement changes sustainably, and support the body as it restores balance.

Expectations are equally important. This approach is not about instant results or symptom suppression. It is about identifying root causes, understanding your body, and creating meaningful, lasting change. Progress is often gradual, but it is deeper and more sustainable.

There is also an investment involved. Functional medicine requires time, expertise, and careful analysis. However, many patients find that by addressing the root cause, they avoid the ongoing cycle of repeated appointments, short-term treatments, and unresolved symptoms.

The focus is not speed; it is lasting, meaningful improvement.

What This Really Means for You

So, what happens during a functional medicine consultation?

It is not a one-size-fits-all appointment.

It is a personalised, in-depth process that looks beyond symptoms and focuses on understanding you as a whole — your history, your physiology, and the factors that have shaped your health. It is participatory.

You are not a passive recipient of advice, but an active part of the process, understanding your body, engaging in decisions, and taking meaningful steps forward.

It is root-cause focused. Rather than managing symptoms in isolation, we look for what is driving them and how those patterns can be changed.

And most importantly, it is transformational.

  • This is not just about treating illness.

  • It is about moving you towards optimal health, resilience, and long-term wellbeing.

For many people, it represents a new way of seeing their health, one that brings clarity, direction, and a sense of control. It is not only for those who feel unwell.

It is also for those who want to stay well, optimise their health, and prevent future disease.
